Participant Observer

Summer has arrived! As is typical for this time of year, our calendar is less jam-packed, but we have some gems!

The San Diego County Fair continues until July 4th. As we have noted, it is predominantly a celebration of Americana, but international-style food and performances are always part of the mix. This year Los Tigres del Norte, Ramon Ayala, and La Adictiva are slated to perform (at an additional cost for concert tickets). The Wailers, Outlaw Mariachi, and "Experience Selena" will perform at no additional cost.

Current theater offerings include The Taming of the Shrew at the Old Globe, Mud Row at the Old Town Theatre, the Musical Lempicka is being performed at UCSD, and Songs for a New World continues at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre in Oceanside (ends Sunday).

Tonight (Friday), at the La Jolla United Methodist Church, the Summer Pops Concert version of the Music of Les Misérables will be performed. The biographical drama Selena will be shown at the Manchester Hyatt. Metalachi will perform at the Belly Up.

Saturday and Sunday the Scottish Highland Games return to Brengle Terrace Park in Vista.

Saturday, Lebanese comedian Nemr Abou Nassar will perform at the Balboa Theatre. There will be an Opening Reception for the New Native Narratives Exhibition at Front Arte & Cultura in San Ysidro. Celebración Mexicana at the Francis Parker School will feature a performance by Ballet Folklorico El Tapatio de San Dieguito.

Sunday, the House of Sweden will hold its annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages in Balboa Park.

Intercambio: A Conversation on the Cross-border Economy KPBS Investigative Border Reporter Gustavo Solis will discuss this relationship with a panel of experts, who will be taking audience questions. Femi Kuti & The Positive Force will perform at the Belly Up in Solana Beach.

Next Wednesday and Thursday, the Studio Ghibli anime film Kiki's Delivery Service will be screened and the Angelika Film Center.

Next Thursday, Saturday & Sunday you can enjoy the classic film Roman Holiday at Cinema Under the Stars in Mission Hills. It is a very pleasant and fun venue.

Next Thursday, the San Diego Italian Film Festival will present an online screening of the film Santiago, Italia.

Next Saturday, the Little Italy Summer Film Series launches with Ammore e Malavita (Love and Bullets), a "romantic comedy mafia musical" set in the lovely city of Naples. The films in the series will all be screened outdoors in Amici Park and continue every Saturday until the beginning of September. At the Quartyard, Noche de Cumbia will feature Tropa Magica. Los Sleepwalkers, Cumbia Machin' & DJ Viejo Lowbo.

Next Sunday, in celebration of Independence Day, the House of USA will present its annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages in Balboa Park.

Everyone here at the San Diego Participant Observer and the Worldview Project wish you fulfilling, illuminating, and culturally-rich experiences in the days ahead. See you next week!

CD of the Month

The Participant Observer Music CD of the Month is Music of the Honey Gatherers by Paban Das Baul.

Steeped in the ancient tradition of the Bauls, the wandering spiritual musicians of Bengal, Music Of The Honey Gatherers is a beautiful and varied collection of stripped back and powerful trance-inducing Baul songs, imbued with the itinerant flavour of life on the road.

Our Book of the Month recommendation is Man Tiger by Hiromi Kawakami.

A wry, affecting tale set in a small town on the Indonesian coast, Man Tiger tells the story of two interlinked and tormented families and of Margio, a young man ordinary in all particulars except that he conceals within himself a supernatural female white tiger..
